Read All About It! October 8, 2008
Parents,
We were very busy during this three-day week. We changed
our routine a bit and deleted centers, as well as a reading unit.
Instead, we began a science unit on mammals, with squirrels
as the focus. I shared non-fictional and fictional material for
background and information. We listed mammal characteristics, then grouped animals that would be within this category. The children made a book to share at home on squirrels. After researching data on these interesting animals, the class wrote reports to display in the hallway. The children also created squirrels with nests to complete the project.
In grammar, we modeled and practiced answering written
questions with a complete sentence. The children need to respond by writing a complete sentence as an answer. I have listed some examples below for review.
What did Poppleton like to eat? Do you enjoy playing soccer?
Poppleton liked to eat potato chips. Yes. I enjoy playing soccer.
Unit 2 in Math has now been completed. It will be sent home next week in the packets. Please scan the test and review any skills/strategies that remain challenging for your child.
Social Studies led to a discussion of Christopher Columbus.
We used maps to locate continents and oceans. I shared several books on this explorer. Work pages were completed.
Library books must be returned by THURSDAY each week.
NAME SHIRTS are being sent home to wash. Please return
the shirts on TUESDAY for classes.
Have a terrific weekend.
Sincerely, Miss Drake
