Read All About It! January 11, 2008
Parents,
Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a wonderful
visit with family and friends during the Holiday Season.
Our return to classes began with a new book and unit.
The first reading selection revolved around the concept question: How can familiar things help us with changes?
During the week we discussed the history of the settlers, transportation of long ago, and crafts. The main reading choice, The Quilt Story has been copied for each child to share at home. The decodable reader, Lunchtime will help
to review the target phonics skill, consonant + le (It adds
an extra syllable to the word.) I have attached a skill
and vocabulary page to reinforce this week’s lessons.
We also reviewed the comparative endings –er/-est at centers, and irregular verbs (drive/drove, write/wrote,
give/gave, etc).
Before winter vacation, I introduced double-digit subtraction. We reviewed this strategy and continued
practice this week. I modeled the strategy of using addition to check the subtraction difference. Please
continue to complete homework daily, so your child does
not fall behind in their work. Put names on all pages.
We are continuing handwriting practice, daily oral
language, writing lessons, and the seasons/weather.
This week we also learned about the five senses.
Have an enjoyable weekend. Sincerely, Ms. Drake
