Mrs. Dougherty's Classroom Notes

Welcome to the 2008-2009 school year!

It's a great privilege to be working with your child in Reading. I teach students in grades 2, 3, 4, and 5. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me by phone (847)-990-4574 or email doughertyl@hawthorn73.org.

The following suggestions are intended to help increase your child's understanding of reading and develop his or her confidence in the learning process.

-Read to your child daily, even if your child knows how to read. For older children, pick something slightly above their ability.

-Model good habits by reading in front of your child.

-Check your child's assignment notebook daily.

-Provide a consistent, daily study period without distractions.

-Visit the public library and/or bookmobile frequently.

-Build vocabulary by talking to your child regularly.

-Read newspaper articles with your child and discuss events in the news.

-Encourage letter writing, pen pals, and thank you notes.

Your support is greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,
Lori Dougherty
